Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Flynorth Aviation located?

We are located at the Aurora state airport (KUAO) in Aurora Oregon.  We service the Portland area and are ready to serve all students. anywhere from Salem, all the way to Wilsonville we welcome anyone who's ready to take the first step and start flying.

What is a Discovery flight?

A discovery flight is like an intro flight that shows what flying a small aircraft is like. it usually lasts about an hour. You first meet with the instructor that will be flying with you, they will go over everything you will be doing and introduce you to the aircraft you will fly and take you up to get a feel for how flying works.  This is a great way to experience flying with no commitment requirements. Just a stress free way to get a feel for flying and if its something you want to pursue.

What age requirements are there to get your Private Pilots license?

In order to get your private pilots license you must be 17 years or old to obtain it.  you must be at least 16 years old to fly an aircraft solo as well.  However you can start your training at any age to build hours and gain helpful experience early.

Do I need a Medical certification to start training?

If you are looking to get your PPL (private pilots license) then you must have at least a class 3 medical license. However this does not need to be done immediately but must be done before your first solo flight. This can be obtained by a FAA certified medical examiner. We have one here at Flynorth aviation. to schedule an appointment give us a call and well get you set up.

How long does it take to get your Private Pilots license?

It depends on how often you fly and quickly materials make sense. The FAA requires at least 40 hours of flight time before you can obtain your private pilots license, however the national average of hours accrued before obtaining a PPL (private pilots license) is around 65 hours.  Everyone learns at different speeds and has different time commitments. it can take as little as 3 months or as long as 1 year. it really depends on the individual.

How much does it cost to get your Private pilots license?

The cost varies as well.  It all depends on hours, what kind of aircraft you want to rent, and how quickly you get it done. a good range to be at is typically around $12,000-$20,000.  the low end having minimal flight hours and renting a basic aircraft. high end being more hours, and more sophisticated aircraft.

What is the difference between a sport pilot and a Private pilot?

A sport pilot license is more for small aircraft to use on a more recreational level. these are two seater aircraft that are small and light aircraft. This is a cheaper way to the cockpit. However a private pilot license gets you access to larger, heavier aircraft and allows for further endorsements (multi engine, instrument rating, etc) .

What tests are required to get your private pilots license?

There are three major "exams" you must pass in order to obtain your private pilots license. first is your pre-solo exam/quiz. This is givne before your first solo and is created by your instructor to make sure you are competent and ready to solo. Next is your written exam, this is a 60 question "final exam" that shows you are competent in all thing flying and aircraft knowledge. final is the checkride, this is your final flight before obtaining your Private pilots license. this will include an oral portion with an examiner and a flight where you perform turns, takeoffs and landings and other maneuvers to show control in the aircraft.

What is ground school and do I need it?

Ground school is a in person "classroom style" flight instruction that teaches you all the knowledge you will need to know in order to fly a plane before you even step foot in the cockpit. It is not required to get your private pilots license however the class helps you learn and organize all the information you need to succeed as a pilot.

What aircraft does Flynorth aviation use?

We have a fleet of over 16 different aircraft. most or Cessna 150's and 172's making up 90% of our fleet with other aircraft such as an apache and a piper for other ratings. the Cessna 150's are our cheapest option with the 172's being the runner up option.

What is Aurora state airport (KUAO) like for flight traini?

Aurora state airport is arguably the perfect airport to train at. Its big enough that it has a tower to practice radio calls at towered airports. However its also small enough that there are very little larger aircraft entering and leaving the airspace. it creates a perfect environment to build needed skills for all pilots to succeed on the ground and in the air.

Can I rent an aircraft without taking lessons?

short answer, yes you absolutely can. However you need a private pilots license, your third class medical license, and renters insurance in order to be cleared to rent an aircraft.

Can I become a commercial pilot at Flynorth Aviation?

Yes we have all the certifications and qualifications you need in order to get your commercial license here at Flynorth Aviation. you need your PPL (private pilots license), at least 250 hours of specific flight hours logged as well as a second class medical license and taken the commercial exam. However an important note is that this is the minimum requirements. Airlines require other certifications such as multi engine ratings and around 1500 flight hours.

How often should I fly to make the most progress?

Generally most pilots allocate 2-3 days a week. This is the average time per week and gives you just enough that you are gaining good experience and can keep building on past flights but still get small breaks in between to study or just relax for a minute. other do slower, more like 1-2 times a week. A very small amount of student may do 5 days a week to eccelarate their training and complete it as fast and efficiently as possible.

What if the weather is bad on the day that I fly?

If the weather goes bad before a fight then generally you will either cancel or reschedule a flight. Another option is to wait out the weather depending on peoples schedules. Usually pilots will look at weather days before to anticipate is before they fly.
